CHHS Director Elected INFORMS President-elect


Co-founder and director of the Center for Health and Humanitarian Systems, Pinar Keskinocak has been elected president-elect of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS), which is one of the largest professional association for operations research, management science, and analytics professionals.

CHHS sponsored and actively participated in the

Global Health Summit hosted by The World Affairs Council of AtlantaThe event focused on the devastating impacts natural disasters have on health and better ways to prepare.

   

Georgia Tech’s ADVANCE Program supports an inter-college network of faculty promoting the advancement of women and underrepresented minorities in academia. 
CHHS Director. Dr. Keskinocak is among the distinguished professors leading this program which is open to all faculty, staff, and students. 
   

INFORMS Accolades Continued...

CHHS research director, Turgay Ayer, in joint work with researchers from University of Texas at Dallas, won the Informs eBusiness Section Best Paper Award for “When IT Creates Legal Vulnerability: Not Just Over utilization but Under provisioning of Health Care Could Be a Consequence.” Dr. Ayers Ph.D. student Zhaowei She, and Daniel Montanera (Georgia State University) also received an honorable mention for the Public Sector Operations Research Best Paper Award for “Pay for Performance or Pay for Selection? An Analysis of the Capitation Payment Models in Health Care.”

ISyE Offers Rwanda Study Abroad
Sustainable Development is a new program offered for the first time this spring. Students will engage in develop projects in Rwanda including energy, agriculture and wildlife conservation. The program directors are Professors Valerie Thomas (ISyE and PUBP), Jonathan Colton (ME) and Anthony Giarrusso (City and Regional Planning).
     

GTRI At 2018 Nethope Global Summit- Dublin Ireland 
Leigh McCook, Brian Parise, and Nick Mulkey of GTRI's Information and Communications Lab recently presented a workshop on Mixed-Methods Data Collection, Visualization, and Data Story telling in Emergency Responses at the 2018 Nethope Global Summit  November 5-9.  

     

Georgia Tech ISyE Professor Nicoleta Serban — Examines Medicaid Capacity

Children on Medicaid may lack sufficient access to dental care, and two nationwide studies led by Georgia Tech ISyE Professor Nicoleta Serban — the first to examine Medicaid capacity at the provider level — now show a more complete picture of the U.S.' publicly-funded dental care program. IPaT, ISyE, and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta have previously provided funding for this research. In September 2018, a $1.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health was awarded to Professor Serban to support her research on access to preventive dental care for children.

     

Georgia Tech and Emory Partner on Mild Cognitive Impairment Program 
Georgia Institute of Technology is joining Emory University’s Brain Health Center in launching an innovative research and therapy program for people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), which is often a precursor to Alzheimer’s disease. The James M. Cox Foundation and Cox Enterprises, Inc. are supporting the new MCI Empowerment Program with a $23.7 million gift.
     

Senior Design Teams Focus on Health and Humanitarian Needs
Several ISyE senior design teams have been focusing their efforts on health and humanitarian projects during Fall 2018. Project collaborators include: Second Helpings Atlanta, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Grady Infusion Center, Wellstar Kennestone Hospital, and the Children's Hospital Sibley Heart Center.To read more about these and other projects Visit the ISyE Senior Design
     

ML4H: Machine Learning for Health
The NIPS 2018 Conference recently hosted a Machine Learning for Health Workshop and CHHS research director, Turgay Ayer was accepted to present a paper regarding “An Analytics Approach to Hypertension Management”. The paper studied optimal joint systolic/diastolic blood pressure treatment thresholds using a machine learning approach.
